Portraits of the inventor

This is Sir William Robert Grove (1811-1896). Grove was a Welsh lawyer and professor of physics. He is known for his work as an inventor of batteries, including nitric acid cell batteries used for the American telegraph (1840s-60s), and gas votaic batteries which were the forerunners of modern fuel cells.

The first portrait is a calotype taken by Adamson and Hill in 1844. The other is a daguerrotype by Antoine Claudet in 1849.
