Welcome! 1850s Contemporary Illustrations
Dickens' Mr Guppy

This is a plate from the original edition of Bleak House, with this part of the series published September 1852. The main figure, on the right, is Mr Guppy, a young swell who thinks too much of himself. His part in the book was to be a student of law and a rejected suitor to the book's heroine. Illustrations of Dickens' books have some exaggerated features to get the characters across but do not stray too far from what was being worn at the time. Drawing by Hablot Knight Browne.
