Lithograph sketch made in
1840 by Gavarni, a popular French illustrator who spent years drawing
Parisian characters and manners. This one is the government clerk, one
of many characters whose habits were described in a book about people's
occupations. He seems to be facing inclement weather, as he has an
umbrella in his arm and is leaning forward like against a wind: so we
may suppose this coat and hat were the sort to keep a man warm.
